The Best Bakeries in Lisbon

Published May 3, 2026

Lisbon is a pastry city first and a bread city second. The pastel de nata — the custard tart born at the Jerónimos monastery in Belém — is the city's most famous export, but Lisbon's bakery tradition runs far deeper than one tart.

Pastéis de Belém

The original. The monks' secret recipe has been baked here since 1837, and the tarts are still made in a sealed room by a small team who guard the recipe. Eat them warm, dusted with cinnamon and powdered sugar.

Manteigaria, Chiado

If you can't get to Belém, Manteigaria in Chiado bakes excellent natas in an open kitchen. They're served warm, straight from the oven, and the pastry is shatteringly crisp.

Landeau Chocolate, Príncipe Real

Not a traditional bakery but a single-product obsession: one chocolate cake, served in thick slices. Molten in the centre, barely set, and arguably the best chocolate cake in Europe.

Padaria Portuguesa

A modern chain that has elevated Portuguese everyday baking. Excellent bolo de arroz (rice cake), croissants, and the pão com chouriço (bread with chorizo) are all reliable.
